The Little Eaton
Planting Project
We recently completed a planting project for our customer based in Little Eaton, Derbyshire.
This is the perfect example of how plants can give you a dramatic transformation, not just for your space, but your lifestyle too.
The Project Goal:
To create an established garden using mature shrubs and trees for instant impact.
The Beginning
We met Mr and Mrs Tattersall at our retail area based in Burton-on-Trent. Their outdoor space had already been completely redeveloped by PB Landscapes of Melbourne, and they were ready to plant!
Our Plant Specialist, James, visited their beautiful home in Little Eaton and began the process of designing a planting concept.
As we do for every project, we first establish what our clients have in mind in terms of their garden goals, budget, timescales, and so on, before we start formulating a plan.
The unique element of the Little Eaton planting project was the freedom it gave James to work his magic.
The Location
We carried out an initial site visit to better understand the space we had to work with. Right from the very first sight, we thought ‘Wow’.
The garden slopes uphill quite steeply, and PB Landscapes of Melbourne have transformed it from a barren, grassed area into a sleek, and contemporary space.
More correctly, I should say spaces! As you move through the garden, the different levels and cleverly set out sections alter the perspective completely, depending on where you are standing.
With an incredible space to fill, James was already working on planting concepts in his head.
The Concept
Here is where things became very interesting. James is a plants man – his extensive knowledge is second to none and after being married to him for many years, I know what he can do.
Ian and Nikki had to go with their gut feel of what he proposed.
He purposefully kept the specification fluid so once he was in the space, he could ‘feel’ the flow. He would better understand how each space would be used.
How to draw the eye from the start of the garden to the end. Take in how the perception of space altered depending on where you stood or sat. This takes a great deal of trust and open communication. Both of which held mutual respect.
The Execution
Each time James and Richard came back to our base in Burton, you could see the enthusiasm for the project was sustained – yes of course there were challenges but with both Ian and Nikki on board with developing the concept, it drove the project forward.
It just so happens they had chosen my favourite Olive Tree and given it a beautiful space for it to shine in all its glory. And not only the olive tree…but James too.
How he designs and executes his planting concepts is a form of art and the Tattersalls trusted him the perfect canvas to showcase some of his finest work.
The Result
When I describe the ‘feel’ of the garden, I believe this is largely down to the innate ability of the Tattersalls to seek out specialists in their sectors, provide the perfect challenge as well as environment to work within and watch as the magic unfolds.
By giving James the freedom to work with the space and how it feels, he’s created something rather spectacular.
A planted masterpiece you may say.
